Panic

PostHeaderIcon Panic

Tomorrow I’ll be headed to San Antonio, Texas, to join my wife who’s there for business, and to visit some good friends.
I know that there are rumors that the one and only true reason for my trip to San Antonio is an opportunity to raid the various local Half Price Book stores, but I, of course, have to deny these slanderous and vile rumors: the fact that I travel with a ridiculously large, yet almost empty suitcase for just four days is merely incidental.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to meeting my friends.

What I’m most certainly NOT looking forward to, is the actual flight.

I have always been fascinated by flying and airplanes.

However, ever since my maiden flight, in 1973, in an old tail dragger over the skies of that sorry excuse for a North Sea resort town, Skegness, Lincolnshire, England, flown by a seemingly deaf, blind and dumb WWI veteran, complete with stuttering engine, to the more comfortable trips in Boeing ‘Jumbo’ 747’sร‚ย of such respectable companies like KLM, Quantas. Garuda en Singapore Airlines, I have been ambivalent about being the actual subject of transportation in these otherwise fascinating flying machines.

Yes, while at different times at different levels of intensity, I suffer from fear of flying.

Unlike most people with phobias, I don’t think my fear is particularly unreasonable or irrational!

Let’s face it: these things DO crash from time to time!

Sometimes I wonder about all those tens of thousands of people who, on any given day, voluntarily board an airplane.
Don’t they see the risk?

Are ALL those people of the mistaken but extremely popular opinion, that, yes, planes DO crash, but this, as by a law of nature, always happens exclusively to ‘other people’?

While this statement has been true, especially for me, so far … am I the only one who sees the fallacy in such a notion?
Don’t they see that there IS a risk that THEY will die in a crash?
True, the odds are firmly against it, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible! Do they simply dismiss the risk based on its low odds?

But don’t these same people buy lottery tickets, hoping to become overnight millionaires on even worse odds?

Okay, admitted, that’s maybe not a good example: the ‘bad’ outcomes of each ‘bet’ aren’t really in the same ball park: losing a few bucks by ‘not winning the lottery’ isn’t nearly as life altering as dying in a fiery plane crash.

And here I am, pondering all this, knowing full well, come tomorrow, that I’ll take a deep breath, drive to the airport, park my car, check in, buy a Scientific American, eat the traditional hot dog at the food stand between gates 123 and 125 in Terminal A, and finally board that plane… accepting my fate, “playing the odds”…

    I hear there are books that deal with this phobia…maybe you can find one at the Half Price Book stores? ๐Ÿ™‚

    And I thought it was beer with friends that would make a trip to San Antonio so appealing!

  • Paul says:

    I’d be more interested in a book about completely eliminating plane crashes!
    And beer with friends certainly makes being in San Antonio very appealing.
    The trip over there, … not so much.
    However, that I’d risk my life for it shows how much I care about my friends!

    (Honey… It’s Deannie’s fault .. SHE told me to go to Half Price Books… really! Else I wouldn’t have THUNK of it)

  • Peter W. says:

    Nah, there’s no such thing as risk-free behaviour. It’s always (ALWAYS) just a matter of mitigating risks to a certain level, and then proceeding. Walking, bicycling, and driving in my city each have their own level of jeopardy. Flying, the same.

    Each time you cross through an intersection, each time you drive near a propane plant, each time you travel near high-voltage lines, the odds could catch up with you. But if we all allow ourselves to be paralyzed, we miss out with certainty the joy to which we are travelling… against the slim chance of accident.

    Of course, I know logic doesn’t actually affect phobia. (Said the man who is thoroughly horrified by the image of the plesiosaur that lives in any given lake).

  • Paul says:

    I know, I know .. I was just trying to justify my phobia. Which, I maintain, is still easier to do than to justify a fear of plesiosaurs in lakes!

    A fear of plesiosaurs? Peter .. really!

    I live in Florida and if I go swimming in the nearby Indian river (intracoastal) I run the risk of being attacked by sharks and alligators simultaneously!
    And here you are, worrying about … PLESIOSAURS?
    You’re such an interesting fellow, Peter!

  • Dawnell says:

    Good grief. He came to San Antonio, drank beer, bought 254 books, drank margaritas and had 3 gin and tonics on the plane coming back home. He could bareley wait for the plane to take off so he could place his drink order! He is now out of free drink coupons, tho. He prolly won’t fly again till we go to San Juan (Puerto Rico) in October.

  • Dawnell says:

    And don’t get me started on grammar …. I KNOW it is 3 gins and tonic! But it is late, and I don’t feel well.

  • Paul says:

    I’ll let the grammar go, but for our non southern-states friends I feel I have to explain that ‘tho’ and ‘prolly’ stand for ‘though’ and ‘probably’ respectively.

    Other words you may encounter in Dawnell’s comments:

    winder = window
    pazacally = exactly (don’t ask!)
    horsepital = hospital
    the clydimicator = Clyde (our cat)
    a somebody = animals in the wild (Look: there is a somebody in the tree)
    I feel quilty = screw work: I’m gonna work a bit on a bed covering composed of a quilt top, a layer of batting, and a layer of fabric for backing, generally combined using the technique of quilting.
    drinkey-pooh = you have to ask? It involves Vodka (if I recalll correctly)
    hubbeke = that would be me
    winkelen = that’s actually correct word-use … in Dutch
    I can’t work = there is a slightly overweight red but soft cat on my desk
    Dinner’s ready! = the pizza delivery boy came
    skim’n dip = puddling around in the pool and getting the bugs off the surface of the water
    doing my yoghurt = doing her yoga
    Spiffy = her car
    The Great White = my car
    that stupid game = the game she plays every night for HOURS
    ‘be very careful or you will get the pineapple (or: the blue mouse)’ = uhm..well… something to do with our cats.
    naner = banana
    asel = donkey
    “I’m ready” (as for going on a trip) = 30 minute warning call
    koeien! = on spotting cows somewhere
    tickees = lottery tickets
    lootery = lottery
    piller = pillow
    Annsday = the Wednesday that Ann, our domestic aid worker comes
    gonna have a knuffle = grabbing the nearest cat and hauling him or her off to the bedroom
    hungees = hungry
    cannot go sweepies = I cannot sleep

    (Okay, I admit .. we both share a lot of this typical Claessen residence dialect: the above is only a selection of the more comprehensible expressions)

  • irene says:

    mmm… at least you got save back ๐Ÿ™‚ now you can prepare for the flight in october…. interesting to see the list above, especially to see that dawnell knows the right dutch words like winkelen well done!!

    Since we are talking about winkelen, can you ask Dawnell to explain where there is an UGG store in Florida to my mother, she will get a shop list from me when they are going to knuffle the cats (or something like that). I started at the ING, but they are very into knowing everything from your employee (read: they will look into your mail), but i can be reached on my hotmail ihelfferich@hotmail.com

    I say lot’s of love to dawnell and to you….. gr irene

  • Injun says:

    I heard a new way to help relax people is to put some snoring sound on in the airplane: will really help! (until you know where it comes from)
