Contortionist?

PostHeaderIcon Contortionist?

I just read something in the news that had me scratching my head. (Happens a lot!).

Before I share the link to the article with you, please .. humor me!

Please perform this little experiment: Have someone handcuff you, hands behind your back.

What? No handcuffs? Booooring!! Anyway, if you lent someone your handcuffs, or lost them, then just do this: put your hands behind your back.

Then, hook your two pinkies, so as to emulate the idea of having your hands handcuffed behind your back.

Don’t let go! Keep those pinkies hooked!

Done that?

Good!

Now … strangle yourself!

Then let me know what you think of this article!

Paul – I read this as well and wondered how you could possibly strangle yourself with handcuffs. Well, actually I guess you could, if they were NOT wrapped around your wrists with your hands behind your back!

Certainly there is more to this story – she either had another medical issue of… well, let’s not get into the “or” – I honestly don’t think our airline security has reached that level (yet – but I could be wrong!).

I also read another story in the last few weeks where a guy was locked up for “going crazy” after being locked in a plane stuck on the tarmac for five hours (waiting for a two hour flight!).

Lock me in a plane on the ground for five hours with no smokes and no freedom to leave and I might do more than “raise hell”.

And that’s exactly why I sit at the emergency exit row now – when I am ready to get off the plane, I am getting off the plane!

I love how they use such vague yet descriptive terms such as she was “disruptive”. I wonder if anyone will be charged with involuntary manslaughter. If I was a lawyer I would definitely be suing the airline.

  • John Walker says:

This is insane: “disruptive” behavior” on a disorderly conduct charge. Why have we given unlimited authority to police officers with only an associates degree? These are the guys that have the “authority” and “right” to shoot restrai, taze, or even shoot you for disorderly or suspicious behavior. It is nearly impossible to strangle yourself with hadcuffs, even when your pulling your legs through them. Plus, any one with a serious medical condition knows from childhood to inform your teachers, employeers and especially law enforcement oficers about your condition. Is is insane! It is another example of why we need new legislation to take absolute authority away from immature gun-totting officers. I know these are the rough thugs who allow us to sleep safe i our beds at night, but something needs to happened so these officers can’t continue to use their authority and rash violence at will.

  • Tink says:

Since it happened here in my lovely city it’s been all over the news. It seems (from what I have been reading) she was running up and down the walkway screaming and refusing to settle down, two officers tried to get her to calm down and she started fighting them, they then handcuffed her, while she screamed, I am not a terrorist I am a sick mom. From one report I read she was headed to an addiction treatment program in Tucson. One of the reports also states they handcuffed her rather than pepper spray or taze her, the cell they held her in (again from what I am reading) was checked on every 15 mins, and it was in between those times she managed to do this. I honestly don’t know waht to think, I have seen a lot of weird stuff at Phoenix airport, but this tops it all.

  • Paul says:

@Al .. why sue the airlines? How about going after folks who took her into custody?

  • Paul says:

@Tink, yeah.. I read all that too. And I’m at a loss too.
All I can say, dear, is NEVER start running around, hollering and screaming when you miss a flight at your beloved Phoenix airport…

  • Tink says:

Update – She was not in standard handcuffs, she had 18 inches of chain between her’s and then a bit of chain hooking her to the bench she was sitting on, they said over all almost 2 feet of play.

  • Rob La Gesse says:

@Tink – that’s interesting. In that case I see how she could have accidentally, or even on purpose, strangled herself.

Of course I still question why she was chained up in the first place…

  • Paul says:

@Rob .. Why was she chained up?
Because she displayed disruptive behavior! And misorderly conduct!
We live in a FREE country, remember! She even may have said some ‘bad’ words! *shudders*

Of course, we COULD have escorted her to a room, given her some assurances and something to drink, be nice and friendly to her, get a doctor and calm her down.
But why do all that when you can handcuff, pepper-spray, taser and lock-up people?

And no, the airlines are not to blame. Nor is the airport.
And maybe not even the security/police folks who did this.. but their TRAINING!

Overreacting law-enforcement/security personell is rapidly becoming rampant! If your police officers are wrestling people to the ground, then handcuff and arrest them in a Washington DC metro station for … chewing gum, .. then you have a problem! If you taser the hell out of someone, who already has three officers sitting on top of him, just because he wanted to ask the Presidential Candidate ONE more question .. you have a problem. If you have your police officers spend whole days in airport bathroom stalls to ‘trap’ adult people trying to sollicit consential sex, you have a problem. If you have police in the DC area arresting people and putting them in jail who have a 0.01% BAC (one small glass of wine), even though the legal limit is 0.08%, and they quote ‘zero tolerance’… you have a problem. If you see stories like this in the news on a daily basis .. you DEFINITELY have a problem!

  • deannie says:

Tink’s comments were illuminating; I too have scratched my head trying to figure out how this could have happened. Of course, ever the optimist, one wonders if this would have hit the news if the person had been black, mexican, etc. rather than a relative of a politician.

  • Paul says:

@Deannie, it’s STILL an odd story though. 18 inches? That makes it real easy to get in front of you.
I also read her husband has been on the phone many times with the airport. How come THAT resulted in absolutely no action? Also: letting your wife travel to a rehab center because she’s addicted to alcohol AND SUICIDAL, all by herself? That’s ASKING for problems.

  • deannie says:

Yeah, I did feel badly for the woman traveling alone if those were her circumstances. Feeling the love…
