She was put on paid leave March 19, two weeks after her journalism class refused to print a new district policy in the paper making principals publishers and all material subject to review. The policy was implemented after a column from sophomore Megan Chase published in the school newspaper Jan. 19 urged tolerance of homosexuals.
Note: it was the CLASS that refused (as it is the students’ newspaper, not the school’s), NOT Mrs. Sorrell! Of course, with her strong feelings about the first ammendment it wouldn’t be a surprise if she has had an advisory role in this, but still… She HAS that right. Arguably even the obligation, to remind her students of their constitutional rights!

But let’s not forget: the bottom line is that people panicked when something positively was said in reference to gays!
]]>Ah, maybe this played a role too: “Sorrell is also known for not being afraid to speak up.”! Tsk tsk tsk … How DARES she!
See link for more on Amy Sorrell.
Note: Sorrell has requested a board hearing, which was granted and will be held today. May 1st the board will vote on contract termination.
If you read the above article about Mrs. Sorrell, you will probably agree that it’s extra sad that this is happening to a very good, dedicated and well-liked teacher, the kind we need MORE of, not less.
