We do wittness a real drama in which the mother does not know herself exactly what it means that her son is proclaiming himself an atheist as she obviously does not know exactly what it means to believe. So, its about getting or not getting presents? What seems to make her so angry is fear. Fear not to know what happens being an atheist, fear not knowing what it means to believe. And certainly fear due to the possibility that the neighbours will know sooner or later. Further more she notices that she has missed the point explaining christianism to her son competely.

The brothers clearly staged the situation. But I am sure they did not expect the complete helpless reaction of the mother.

I do not think that this is an example of bad parenting. I rather think that it is an example of failure. I agree that it is actually a very sad example ..
